Eating at Church
About the book
Eating at Church: A Book of Recipes from Aylmer & Eardley United by Margaret Virany.
The cooks of these 175 superlative recipes are volunteers,
bubbling over with good will, know-how and friendliness. They embody
commensality -- the act of building community by sharing a table. Some
dishes are prepared at home in a well-organized flurry, since they have
to get to church on time. Others are cooked in the church-basement
kitchen by a close-knit team who love what they’re doing, since
it’s for others. If you find a recipe is imprecise, please feel
free to join in creatively and look at a related one nearby. As a child
of the church in the thirties, the author cherishes memories of a
perpetual cycle of strawberry socials, harvest suppers and silver teas.
And those memories, coded in recipes like these, still stir up the
intangible ingredients poured in by the hearts of those earlier 'Eating
at Church’ chefs.
Seeking Information about Lotta Dempsey
A recent e-mail
from club member Dawn Monroe, of Cochrane, Ontario, asks for help from club
members. "I am working on a brief bio of Lotta Dempsey for my website," wrote
Dawn. "Does anyone know her birthday? I have the year but not the month nor the
day." In case you haven't seen Dawn's website, check it out at www.famouscanadianwomen.com

Citizenship
By Christina Pulido-Vielma
On July 1, Her Excellency Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Her Honour Judge Suzanne Pinel conducted the citizenship ceremony at the Canada Aviation Museum.
They delivered very moving speeches about the significance of becoming
part of this country where some find freedom and a new home, stressing
on our new rights and responsibilities.
The GG also acknowledged that the road to come to
Canada may have been difficult and she thanked us for choosing it as
our new home
100 new Canadians from 37 countries, in honour of the Canadian centennial of powered flight took the oath.
I received my Canadian citizenship on Canada Day and
only that will make it memorable forever. Among friends after, I looked
back and I am still not sure of one thing: Did I fill in my electoral
enrollment?
