quiill Ottawa, Ontario, September 10, 2014:

The Media Club of Ottawa is holding its `Meet and Greet`` season opener on Monday, September 22 in the Honeywell Room of Ottawa City Hall at 6 pm.

Originally founded as the Canadian Women's Press Club in 1904 by 16 women journalists who requested and obtained railway passes to the St. Louis World’s Fair*, the Ottawa branch of the national organization was launched in 1916, and renamed The Media Club of Ottawa in 1972.  The Club will celebrate its centennial in 2016.

With an overall objective to improve and maintain the status of journalism as a profession, the Media Club holds 10 annual meetings for experienced journalists and writers, journalism students and instructors to interact, present workshops and discuss issues pertinent to the profession.

The Club presents the Margaret Graham Awards to students of Carleton University, Algonquin College and the University of Ottawa every November.  The Melba Lent Woelfle Award, presented at Algonquin College in June, is administrated by the Community Foundation of Ottawa. Nelly McClung, Charlotte Whitton, and Cora S. Hind are familiar historical figures who also were members during their illustrious lives.

Books written on the subject of the Club include Kay Rex`s, No Daughter Of Mine: The Women And History Of The Canadian Women's Press Club, 1904-1971, and Linda Kay`s *The Sweet Sixteen.

Professor Joe Banks of Algonquin College has been a great supporter of the Media Club - hosting an annual panel at the College with second-year students becoming members and participating in the Club`s student-focused workshops.

The `Meet and Greet` takes place in the Honeywell Room (110 Laurier Ave. West) from 6 to 8 pm.  Journalism students with ID have free admission, while Media Club members and CAJ members pay $15.  Non-member admission is $20. Assorted sandwiches and fresh fruit will be provided.
